Parc Plas Mawr

The moment you step into Parc Plas Mawr, you're in proper woodland - the kind that feels properly wild despite being minutes from Penmaenmawr. This nature reserve near Conwy sprawls across what feels like genuine ancient forest, with paths that wind through old trees and rough terrain that's kept the place from being landscaped to death.

What you actually do here is walk. There's no visitor centre, no interpretive panels, no café - just paths through mixed woodland where you might spot red squirrels if you're lucky and quiet enough. The reserve protects some seriously old oaks and birches, the sort of trees that have been standing since before the A55 was even dreamed of.

It's brilliant for people who like their nature reserves untamed - walkers especially. Kids can run about and burn off energy without anyone worrying about them damaging a manicured lawn. Birdwatchers come here regularly. If you're after a gentle stroll, you can manage an easy circuit in under an hour. Proper adventurous types could spend the whole morning exploring deeper paths.

No entrance fee that we could find, which is why it stays quiet. Spring's excellent for wildflowers and birdsong. Wet weather? The paths get boggy, so decent boots are essential.
