Park Wood

A proper woodland walk near Braintree that actually delivers - no hype needed here. Park Wood is the sort of place where you can lose an hour or two without feeling like you've wasted the petrol getting there. The trees are tall and thick enough to make you forget you're in Essex, with decent paths threading through the undergrowth and enough space that you won't feel hemmed in by other walkers.

It's ideal for anyone after a straightforward forest ramble rather than a destination attraction. Families with kids will manage fine on the main routes, though the ground can be boggy after rain so wellies aren't a bad shout. If you're into birdwatching or just want some peace and quiet away from the main roads, this does the job. A couple of hours is a solid visit - don't expect cafe facilities or anything fancy, just trees and air.

The real value comes if you're camping at Pightle Farm Campsite round the corner. It's less than a mile away, which means you can pop in for an evening walk without lugging kids far from the site. Hill Farm campsite, a bit further out at nearly 6 miles, is also within easy reach if that suits your budget better. Neither location is dramatic or Instagram-ready, but that's rather the point. You're here to breathe and think, not to tick boxes. Worth the detour if you're already in the area, though wouldn't shift plans to visit on its own.
