Park Wood

Walk into Park Wood and you're immediately under a proper canopy of mature trees - the sort of place that feels genuinely separate from the world despite being barely outside St Albans. It's a working woodland that actually belongs to the Woodland Trust, so it's managed and cared for rather than just left to do its own thing.

The paths are well-trodden and easy enough for families with young children, though it does get muddy in places. You're looking at maybe an hour here if you're ambling without purpose, longer if you're the type to stop and listen to birds or hunt for fungi depending on the season. There's genuine woodland atmosphere - not a theme park version of nature, just actual trees, undergrowth, and the occasional clearing.

It works best for quiet walks rather than destination visits. Bring the kids if they can handle a forest without play equipment, or use it as a leg-stretch between hitting nearby parks like Radwell Lake or Fuzzy's Farm if you're doing a park holiday in the area. The Baldock Park Homes campsite is also close enough that you could make this an easy morning walk before heading back for breakfast.

Free to visit, no facilities on site that I'm aware of, so plan accordingly. Go on a weekday morning if you want solitude - weekends pull the local dog-walkers. It's the sort of place worth knowing about if you're staying nearby, rather than worth a special trip from far away.
