Park Wood

Ancient beech trees tower overhead as you follow the narrow paths through this substantial woodland just outside Battle. Park Wood covers a fair chunk of countryside, with well-maintained tracks that wind through different sections of deciduous forest - some bits dense and cathedral-like, others more open with proper clearings where kids can run about.

Families staying at nearby sites like Warren Wood Country Park or Fontmills Farm will find this a cracking spot for an afternoon walk. The paths are buggy-friendly in most places, though you'll want proper shoes after rain as it can get muddy. Dog walkers love it here - plenty of space for hounds to explore off-lead in the deeper sections.

What makes Park Wood particularly good is the variety. You'll spot different tree species as you go, and there's enough terrain variation to keep teenagers interested rather than moaning about 'just another boring walk'. Spring brings bluebells in patches, while autumn turns the whole place into a proper show of colours.

Allow a couple of hours if you want to explore thoroughly, though you could easily spend just 45 minutes on the main circular route. It's free to wander, open all year, and makes a lovely break from the beach if you're staying anywhere along this stretch of Sussex coast.
