Horeman's Wood

You won't find much fanfare about Horeman's Wood, and that's rather the point. It's a proper Sussex forest tucked near Battle, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think instead of fighting through crowds. The woodland walk itself is straightforward - mixed deciduous and conifer trees, decent paths, the sort of terrain that feels like a real forest rather than a manicured park.

Walkers will get the most from it. There's nothing fancy here, no visitor centre or tea shop, just trees, air, and the occasional sign if you're lucky. Kids can manage it fine for an hour or so, though younger ones might find it a bit samey after that. The ground can be boggy in places, so proper boots are a sensible idea rather than trainers.

If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Beech Estate or Seven Acre Woods are both within three miles - it's an easy morning walk before heading elsewhere. It fits nicely into a wider day exploring the area around Battle rather than being a destination in itself. The town of Battle itself has far more going on historically, which means you could combine a woodland ramble here with some proper sightseeing.

Timing-wise, allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on which path you take. Free admission as far as anyone can tell, and it's open to visitors year-round. Autumn is probably the best season - less muddy underfoot and the light filtering through the canopy does something rather special.
