Parkhill Wood

The woodland around Parkhill Wood, just outside Billericay, is proper Essex forest - dense enough to feel like you've left town behind, but manageable enough that you won't need a map or walking boots. Mature trees create a canopy that keeps things cool even on warm days, and there are enough gaps in the undergrowth to let you actually see where you're going.

It's ideal for families who want a straightforward woodland walk rather than a challenging hike. Kids can explore without parents constantly worrying about steep drops or hidden hazards. The forest floor is generally soft underfoot, which means pushchairs are possible on some stretches, though you'll hit the odd muddy patch depending on weather. Walkers will find the paths well-defined, though don't expect waymarking or signs - this is working woodland, not a manicured country estate.

Allow an hour for a decent loop without rushing. There's no visitor centre, café, or facilities that we could confirm, so come prepared. The wood is free to access as far as we know, though always check locally as access can change.

If you're camping nearby - Barleylands Campsite is less than three miles away, or Stuarts Wood if you fancy something quieter - this makes a proper stretch-your-legs stop between pitch days. It's not a destination in itself, but for a quick morning wander before driving elsewhere in Essex, it does the job. The air's fresher than Billericay town itself, and you'll leave feeling like you've actually been outdoors.
