Parkhouse wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Cockermouth, Parkhouse Wood offers the kind of forest you actually want to spend time in - tall conifers mixing with broadleaf trees, paths that don't get rammed with tourists, and genuine quiet. The canopy's thick enough to keep things cool even on warmer days, and the floor's soft with decades of needles and moss. You're looking at anything from a gentle half-hour meander to a couple of hours if you fancy exploring the deeper trails. There's real forest air here, the kind that makes you remember why you came to Cumbria in the first place.

It's ideal for walkers who want something less demanding than the fells but more atmospheric than a park stroll. Families with younger kids will find it manageable, though it's not a destination on its own - treat it as part of a wider day out in the area. The nearby holiday parks, particularly Forest Views Caravan Park just 3.7 miles away, make it a natural addition to a week based in this corner of the Lake District. Skiddaw View and Castle Guards Farm are also close enough for a morning or afternoon visit without faffing about with drive times.

Admission appears to be free, which doesn't hurt. Go early if you can, especially weekends, because even though it doesn't get mobbed, there's something special about having the trees mostly to yourself. The beauty of Parkhouse is that it doesn't pretend to be something it's not - it's a wood, a good one, and sometimes that's exactly what you need.
