Pebsham Wood

The woodland around Pebsham, just inland from Bexhill-on-Sea, is proper Sussex lowland forest - dense, quiet, and exactly the sort of place where you half-expect to bump into a deer round the next bend. It's not dramatic or famous, which is rather the point. You get mixed woodland with mature trees, plenty of shade, and enough space to actually hear yourself think.

Walking here feels refreshingly straightforward. No fancy visitor centre, no entrance fee that I could find - just pull over near the village and step into the trees. The paths are well-trodden enough that you won't get lost, but overgrown enough that it feels genuinely wild. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for a proper poke about, longer if you're the type who stops to identify birds or photograph fungi.

It's best suited to walkers after a bit of woodland solitude rather than families chasing urgent entertainment - young kids might get restless after 20 minutes. Spring brings bluebells; autumn's the right time for mushrooms and golden light filtering through the canopy. Winter's bleak but atmospheric.

If you're based at Normans Bay Camping and Caravanning Club Site nearby, Pebsham Wood makes an easy morning outing before heading down to the seafront at Bexhill. It breaks up a seaside holiday nicely without demanding much effort. The sort of place you'll forget you went until you're back home and realize you actually feel rather better for it.
