Peckham Fields Wood

A proper woodland walk just a few miles outside Maidstone, Peckham Fields Wood is the sort of place locals know about and visitors stumble upon by accident. It's a working forest rather than a manicured country estate - think established trees, muddy paths, and the kind of quiet that actually feels restorative after Kent's busier attractions.

You're looking at a straightforward walk through woodland, nothing dramatic or strenuous. The trees create decent cover, which matters when you're camping nearby - a sudden downpour won't ruin your afternoon. It's ideal for families who want their kids to burn some energy without an agenda, and serious walkers won't find it challenging enough to justify a special trip, but they'll appreciate the peace.

As for timings, most people spend an hour here, maybe ninety minutes if you're the sort who stops to identify birds or photograph fungi. The ground gets waterlogged after rain, so proper boots aren't optional. Whether it's free or requires payment isn't entirely clear, but access seems relatively open.

For a camping holiday, it works well in combination with River View just 2 miles away or The Hop Farm at 3.3 miles. After a morning here, you could easily hit other Kent attractions without much driving about. On its own though? It's pleasant but not the reason to book a week in the area. More of a bonus spin-off from somewhere else.
