Pen Trum-gŵr

The walk up Pen Trumgŵr from Machynlleth isn't what you'd call brutal, but it's proper steep in places and the scramble at the top demands respect. You're looking at roughly 1,100 feet of ascent, which doesn't sound like much until your legs remind you otherwise halfway up.

What makes it worthwhile is the view across the Dyfi Valley once you crest the ridge. Clear days offer sight lines all the way to Cardigan Bay, and the Cambrian Mountains roll away in every direction. The peak itself is a working affair - telecommunications mast and all - but that doesn't spoil the experience if you're after genuine mountain air and solitude.

This is proper walker territory. Families with small children will struggle; the path gets muddy and narrow towards the summit, and there's nothing cute about it. But anyone aged ten-plus with reasonable fitness will manage it fine. Allow three to four hours for a comfortable round trip from the car park near Machynlleth town.

Timing matters. Early morning or late afternoon beats midday crowds, and the light gets genuinely special in autumn. Spring can be boggy. If you're camping at Gwerniago or Cae Du - both close by - this makes for an excellent half-day excursion that doesn't require a full trip away from base.

No facilities at the top, so bring water and snacks. Machynlleth itself has decent cafes for post-walk recovery.
