Penbrynyreglwys

The walk up Penbrynyreglwys, just inland from Holyhead, rewards you with proper views across Anglesey's moorland and out towards the Irish Sea. It's not a massive peak - nothing that'll leave you breathless - but the vantage point is genuinely useful if you're trying to get a sense of the island's geography. On a clear day you can pick out landmarks for miles.

What makes it worthwhile is the walk itself rather than any dramatic summit structure. The approach takes you through typical Anglesey terrain: rough grass, low scrub, the occasional stone wall marking ancient field boundaries. Locals know it well; tourists often miss it entirely, which means you won't be fighting crowds. Allow maybe 45 minutes to an hour there and back depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top.

This works best for walkers who actually enjoy the process of getting somewhere rather than ticking off a destination. Families with young kids might find it a bit of a slog without much payoff at the summit - there's no café, no interpretation boards, no facilities whatsoever. But if you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Pengraig or Llain Ffynnon are closest - it's an easy morning outing before heading elsewhere.

Timing-wise, aim for clearer weather. Anglesey can be damp, and cloud at this height will rob you of the views entirely. Free access as far as I can tell, though there's no official infrastructure to speak of. Brings together nicely with walking trails closer to Holyhead town itself.
