Penny Wood

The woodland at Penny Wood, just outside Sandringham, is a proper little escape if you're after something quieter than the big country estates nearby. You're looking at mixed native woodland - oak, beech, and pine - with a network of paths that wind through without too much fanfare. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which feels rare around here.

The walking is straightforward and gentle, nothing that'll leave your legs screaming. Most visitors spend an hour to ninety minutes poking about, though there's no pressure to rush. It works brilliantly if you're camping at Kings Lynn Caravan & Camping Park six miles away and fancy a morning stroll before heading into Sandringham village proper. Families with younger kids will find it manageable, though it's not a destination that'll keep them entertained for hours.

Worth timing for late spring or autumn. The bluebells are decent in May, and the light through the trees in September is genuinely lovely. Summer can feel a bit heavy and samey. There's no obvious visitor infrastructure - no café, no toilet block that I could find - so come prepared.

It's free to wander, which is refreshing. Not everyone knows it exists, which is half the appeal. If you're splitting your time between Sandringham and the broader Norfolk coast, this slots in nicely as a halfway-house sort of thing, somewhere to break up the drive without overthinking it.
