Pennymore Point, Dun site

You won't find gift shops or interpretation boards at Pennymore Point. What you will find is a proper Iron Age fort, its ramparts still visible after two thousand years, sitting on high ground above Cairndow with views across towards Loch Fyne. The site itself is modest - earthwork defences forming a rough oval, the kind of place that stops you mid-walk and makes you think about who built it and why they chose this spot.

It's a destination for walkers and archaeology enthusiasts rather than families after a day out, though if your kids are keen on spotting ancient earthworks and don't mind a bit of rough terrain, they'll find it interesting enough. There's no visitor infrastructure - no car park, no admission fee, no facilities - so you're essentially accessing open ground. The walk in from Cairndow takes about forty minutes depending on your route, and you should allow an hour on site if you want to properly examine the ramparts and soak in the location.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Stucreoch, Argyll, or Strathlachlan are all within a few miles - this makes sense as a half-day excursion combined with a longer circuit walk along the glen. The weather here can turn quickly, so pick a clear day to get the most of the views. Don't expect crowds or comfort, but if you like reading the landscape and understanding how people lived in these hills centuries ago, it's absolutely worth the effort.
