Pentewan Beach

Sand stretches for a decent mile here, backed by the old china clay harbour that once made this village proper industrial. That heritage shows - the beach has a working feel rather than the polished resort vibe you get elsewhere along this stretch of Cornwall. Good thing too, as it keeps the crowds manageable even in peak summer.

Families do well here. The sand's clean enough for castle building, though don't expect pristine Caribbean conditions - this is a Cornish beach with character. Rock pools appear at low tide near the eastern end, keeping younger ones busy for ages. The sea can be a bit nippy, but that's half the charm.

Walkers get a proper treat with the coast path heading both directions from the village. Head west towards Mevagissey for dramatic clifftop views, or east if you fancy a gentler stroll. The village itself has basic facilities - a shop, pub, and cafe that does decent pasties.

Being just outside St Austell, you're well placed for exploring the Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan. Several holiday parks sit within walking distance, including Pentewan Sands right behind the dunes. Parking can be tricky in summer - arrive early or prepare for a bit of a walk from the village car park.
