Pentewan Harbour

Standing water where once ships docked tells quite a story. Pentewan Harbour isn't really a harbour anymore - it's a peaceful freshwater lake that formed after the old port silted up in the 1960s. The railway line that brought China clay down from the moors still runs alongside, though it's now the scenic St Austell to Par branch.

Families with young children will find this spot particularly appealing. The shallow water stays relatively warm, and there's enough flat space around the edges for picnics and gentle exploring. Wildlife watchers do well here too - herons are regular visitors, and the reed beds attract various songbirds.

Walkers can follow the old tramway path that leads inland towards the Lost Gardens of Heligan, making this a proper starting point for a longer day out. The contrast between the industrial heritage and current tranquillity feels quite striking.

You'll find decent parking in Pentewan village itself, and the short walk down gives you time to spot the old quay walls still visible beneath the water. It's completely free to wander around, though there aren't any facilities here beyond what the village offers. Holiday makers staying at nearby Pentewan Sands Holiday Park are perfectly placed - it's barely a five-minute stroll down the hill.
