Penyghent Long Churn

You'll find yourself scrambling up a limestone hillside near Settle, following a well-trodden path that climbs steeply towards the entrance of Penyghent Long Churn. This isn't a grand cavern with dramatic formations - it's a proper Yorkshire pothole, the kind that requires a head torch and a willingness to get muddy. The cave system runs beneath Pen-y-ghent fell, and walkers typically enter through Long Churn and emerge via Hull Pot Cave further down the hill, making it part of a satisfying circular route rather than a there-and-back affair.

It's absolutely the cave for serious walkers and caving enthusiasts, less so for casual visitors expecting easy access. The passage is tight in places, wet underfoot, and demands a reasonable level of fitness to scramble through. First-timers should go with someone who knows the system - getting turned around underground in the dark loses its charm fast. You're looking at a couple of hours for the full traverse, depending on your pace and how much time you spend admiring the glistening walls where water's worked the stone smooth over millennia.

Free to enter, though you'll want proper torches and possibly a guide. The best time is late spring through early autumn when water levels are lower. If you're based at one of the local pods or campsites - Ribblesdale Pods is right there, barely two miles away - it makes an excellent afternoon objective. Combine it with the broader Three Peaks walk if you're feeling ambitious, or just use it as a dramatic detour on a fell ramble. Settle itself is worth a proper explore beforehand; proper market town charm.
