Peppercombe Coachhouse

The old coachhouse at Peppercombe sits tucked into Devon's green folds, a genuine working nature reserve rather than a manicured visitor attraction. You're looking at restored woodland and wetland where the real focus is conservation - birds, insects, plants doing their thing without much fanfare. Walking the paths here feels proper, actually wild. Not the kind of place with a gift shop or marked trails every five metres. Instead, you get quiet observation spots and the genuine article: kingfishers if you're lucky, dragonflies thrumming over the water in summer.

It's best for people who actually want to watch nature rather than just walk through it. Patient types. Birders especially. Young kids might lose interest quickly unless they're the magnifying-glass sort, but families serious about wildlife will find it rewarding. The location near Bideford makes it a solid addition to a camping week - Broad Park is barely two miles off, and you could easily combine this with beach time at Westward Ho! without much faffing about.

Low-key is the whole point here. Admission details are thin on the ground, but that's often the way with genuine reserves - you turn up, have a look around, maybe find a honesty box. Allow an hour if you're wandering casually, longer if you're genuinely watching for birds. Go early morning or late afternoon when wildlife's actually about. The wetland side is prettiest in spring when everything's flooding properly.
