Walking into Sloo Wood feels like stepping back into something older than the manicured Devon countryside around Bideford. The trees here are proper ancient - twisted oaks and dense undergrowth that block out half the sky even in summer. It's the sort of place where you actually notice the quiet.

What you get is a genuine woodland walk, nothing more, nothing less. There are paths through the forest, though they're not exactly theme-park smooth - roots catch at your boots, branches low enough to require a duck or two. If you're after a tidy nature trail with interpretive boards, look elsewhere. If you want to feel like you've actually gone somewhere, this works.

Families with young kids might find it a bit of a slog if the children aren't keen on walking, but older ones who can handle muddy terrain will enjoy the rambling feel. Walkers will appreciate it as a proper break from coastal path fatigue - somewhere to let your legs work without the sea air blasting you sideways. History buffs might dig the sheer age of the woodland, though there's no visitor infrastructure to bang on about it.

Allow an hour minimum, longer if you're actually exploring rather than power-walking through. It's free to access, naturally, and worth timing around the camping spots nearby - Broad Park and Owl Valley are all within a few miles.
