Percy's Cross Plantation

A sprawl of conifers and mixed woodland sitting just outside Alnwick, Percy's Cross Plantation is the sort of place you might stumble upon while exploring the quieter corners of Northumberland rather than deliberately plan a trip around. The forest itself is modest compared to some of the region's bigger woodland areas, but that's partly its appeal - you can walk it without committing half your day.

There's a decent network of paths threading through the trees, good for stretching your legs or letting the kids burn off energy without needing to navigate serious terrain. Walkers will find it straightforward enough, though it's not particularly dramatic or scenic in the postcard sense. No waterfall or moorland views to write home about, just solid woodland and the kind of peaceful quiet you actually remember afterwards.

It works well as a morning activity if you're based at River Breamish Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite nearby - close enough for a quick excursion, far enough to feel like you've properly gone somewhere. Allow a couple of hours maximum, depending how slowly you amble. The ground can get boggy after rain, so waterproof boots are sensible.

Families with younger children might find it pleasant rather than gripping - there's no obvious playground or focal point, just trees and paths. But if you're after a gentle woodland wander without the crowds of bigger forests, and you're already in the Alnwick area, it's worth the detour.
