Petersnest Wood

The woodland around Petersnest is the sort of place you stumble into by accident and then wonder why you haven't been back more often. Ancient trees crowd the paths here - proper old growth stuff, not plantation forestry - and the light filters through in those green-tinted shafts that make you actually want to slow down. It's walking country, through and through.

You're looking at a few miles of decent trails depending on how far you fancy going, with enough variation to keep it interesting without being exhausting. The forest floor is thick with moss and leaf litter, which means muddy boots are practically guaranteed, but that's half the appeal. Families with primary-school-age kids will get a couple of hours out of it easily. Older walkers come here to breathe properly and maybe spot a bit of wildlife if they're patient. There's something about Gloucestershire woodland that feels genuinely away from things, even though you're only a few miles from Stroud.

It's free to access - no car park fees, no ticket booth - which means it draws proper local traffic on weekends. Go early on a Saturday or on a weekday if you want the place quieter. The paths can be slippery in winter and boggy after rain, so decent footwear isn't optional. If you're staying at Pepper Pot Caravan Park nearby, this is an easy detour worth taking. Not a destination by itself, but absolutely worth the walk while you're in the area.
