Pettyfield Wood

A proper Essex woodland that doesn't shout about itself. Pettyfield Wood sits east of Braintree and delivers what you'd hope for - tall trees, decent walking trails, and the kind of quiet you don't get near town. The paths are well-maintained, threading through mixed woodland where you'll spot oak and birch if you know what you're looking at. Nothing fancy, nothing manicured. Just a working wood that lets you get on with it.

Walkers will find it genuinely rewarding. The trails loop cleanly enough that you can spend anything from forty minutes to a couple of hours in here depending on which way you fancy. The ground's reasonably firm most of the year, though it gets boggy in patches after heavy rain - waterproof boots are sensible. Kids tend to engage properly with woods like this rather than the sculpted parks. There's room to explore, fallen trees to clamber over, the occasional stream. Real stuff.

It's free entry, which helps when you're based at somewhere like Hill Farm campsite nearby - six miles away makes it an easy half-day outing when the weather's decent. Go midweek if you can. Weekends pull the local crowd, and while it's hardly rammed, the peace gets fractured. Summer's fine, but October through March shows the wood at its best - the light's better, the paths less muddy than you'd expect. Close to Braintree means you're within easy striking distance of actual attractions if needed, but honestly, sometimes a wood is enough.
