Pincote Wood

The woodland around Pincote isn't going to blow your mind, but it's a decent spot if you're based near Royston and want to stretch your legs without driving for ages. It's proper fenland country out here - flat, a bit marshy in places, with that characteristic East Anglian bleakness that either appeals to you or doesn't.

You get quiet paths through mixed woodland with patches of open ground where you can actually see what's around you. The trees aren't ancient or dramatic - this is working countryside, managed woodland rather than some primordial forest. But that's rather the point. It feels unpretentious in a way some nature reserves don't.

Walkers will find it useful for an hour or so, maybe ninety minutes if you're dawdling. There's nothing here to keep kids entertained for long unless they're genuinely into spotting birds or beetles. The flat terrain means it's accessible for most fitness levels, which is something.

Timing-wise, spring and autumn are best when the wood looks less like a damp slog. Summer can be muddy, winter grey and uninviting. If you're staying at Guilden Gate Glamping nearby, you could build this into a morning walk before heading elsewhere - it's convenient rather than unmissable. Worth knowing about if you're in the area, less worth planning a trip around.
