Pitsford Reservoir

The water here is vast and still, stretching across 148 acres like a giant mirror on quiet mornings. Pitsford Reservoir is a proper working water supply for Northampton, but the wildlife teams have made something genuinely special out of it. You'll find yourself on footpaths that wind around the edges, binoculars in hand if you're any sense - this is serious birdwatching territory. Great crested grebes, cormorants, and if you're lucky, winter visitors like wigeon and pintail make this one of the better spots in the county for ornithology.

The walking is straightforward rather than dramatic. A circuit of the whole thing takes a couple of hours at a steady pace, though you can do shorter stretches easily. It's the kind of place where you notice things gradually - a flash of kingfisher, dragonflies in summer, the quality of light on the water changing through the seasons. Families with younger children might find it a bit thin on attractions after the first mile, unless they're genuinely keen on birds.

Based just outside Northampton, it slots perfectly into a wider park holiday. Overstone Lakes and Billing Aquadrome Holiday Park are close by and offer more structured activities if you need them, while Moon Valley Glamping Retreat and Sandy Hill Farm provide quieter bases. Best visited early morning or late afternoon when bird activity peaks and the paths are less crowded. Free access, no faffing about with entrance fees.
