Pitsford Water

A vast reservoir just north of Northampton, Pitsford Water is one of those places that catches you off guard with how much there is to do in what looks like an ordinary bit of Northamptonshire countryside. The water itself is the main draw - it's a proper magnet for birdwatchers, especially in winter when you might spot great crested grebes, cormorants, and if you're lucky, a visiting osprey or two.

Walking is the real point here. There are decent paths around the perimeter, some of which take you right to the water's edge, others that loop through quieter sections where you can actually hear yourself think. It's not dramatic - no craggy peaks or ancient stone circles - but it's genuinely peaceful, and that's worth something when you've come out of the city. Families with younger kids will manage the easier stretches without issue, though it's not the sort of place that'll hold their attention all afternoon unless they're into spotting birds or skipping stones.

The nature reserve side is serious business. There's a visitor centre (though hours aren't always reliable, so check ahead), and the birdwatching community takes it very seriously indeed. Bring binoculars and a decent bird book. Free to access, as far as we can tell, though that's worth confirming when you arrive.

Staying at Moon Valley Glamping or Sandy Hill Farm puts you minutes away, and it's a sensible half-day outing alongside visits to Overstone Lakes or Sywell Country Park nearby. Come on a weekday morning if you want it quiet.
