Plunton Hill

You won't find crowds at Plunton Hill, which is precisely why it's worth the climb. This modest peak in Dumfries & Galloway rises above the landscape near Kirkcudbright with views that sweep across the Solway Firth towards the Lake District hills - proper reward for the walk up.

The summit itself is modest, no more than a couple of hundred metres, but that means it's accessible without needing fell-walking experience. Most people tackle it as a gentle afternoon outing rather than a full day's expedition. If you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Seaward, Brighouse Bay or Auchenlarie are all within a few miles - it makes a logical morning walk before heading into Kirkcudbright for lunch. It's the sort of spot you do on a clear day, not when the clouds are hanging low.
