Plurenden Wood

Walk into Plurenden Wood near Ashford and you're surrounded by proper ancient woodland - the kind of place where the trees have been doing their thing for centuries. It's a working forest rather than a manicured visitor attraction, which means you get the real deal: dense canopy, forest floor thick with leaf litter, and the occasional reminder that humans are just passing through.

The woodland itself is manageable on foot. Paths wind through without being fancy or over-engineered, so you can wander for an hour or push it to two if you're keen. Families with school-age kids will have a decent time here - there's plenty of space to let them loose and the sort of natural stuff (fallen logs, streams, wildlife) that keeps them occupied without screens. Older walkers and anyone genuinely interested in woodland ecology will find more to engage with.

Timing-wise, spring and early autumn are when it really shines - less muddy than winter, less buggy than peak summer. There's no visitor centre or café, so come prepared. This isn't a day-long destination, but it sits well within a broader Kent park holiday. Go Glamp, just over 5 miles away, would give you the camping side of things, and Plurenden fills the gap for proper woodland wandering when you're tired of more structured attractions. Free to access and genuinely quiet - you won't fight crowds here.
