Pod Hill

There's a proper fell walk waiting at Pod Hill, a modest nature reserve just outside Wigton that punches above its weight for walkers after something uncomplicated. The terrain climbs steadily through moorland with decent views across the Solway Firth towards Scotland on a clear day - nothing vertigo-inducing, but rewarding enough that you'll feel you've earned the effort.

Historically this was working fell, and you can still read the landscape accordingly. The reserve is managed for both wildlife and public access, so you get heather moorland and open vistas rather than anything manicured. That said, it's not a destination that demands hours. Most people manage the circuit in two to three hours depending on pace and how often they stop to catch their breath or photograph the view.

Walkers will absolutely get the most from Pod Hill. Families with older children who don't mind a bit of climbing will be fine. Serious hikers heading to the Lake District might treat this as a morning warm-up before hitting the bigger fells. The going can be boggy after rain, which matters if you're not in proper boots.

It's free to access, though you'll find no facilities up there. Pop into Wigton first for provisions. The proximity to Stanwix Park Holiday Centre and Solway Holiday Park makes this ideal as a day break from caravan life - close enough for an afternoon sortie without needing to commit to a full expedition further afield. North Lakes Country Park sits a few miles south if you're cycling through the region.
