Pods Wood

Walking into Pods Wood east of Colchester, you're straight into proper Essex woodland - the sort of place where the trees are thick enough that you forget the A12 exists somewhere nearby. It's a forest, so expect woodland trails, dappled light filtering through the canopy, and that earthy smell that only comes after rain.

This is one for people who actually want to walk rather than just snap a photo and leave. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which means it's refreshingly uncommercial. Families with older kids will get on fine here - younger ones might lose interest after an hour or so unless they're proper little nature enthusiasts. History types won't find much of note, but if you're keen on native trees and recognising oak from beech, you'll be content for a couple of hours.

The wood sits handily close to Colchester's other outdoor spots. You could easily combine it with time at Colchester Country Park or Mill Beach Seaside Resort a few miles south if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Swallows Field Glamping Pods. In summer the woodland offers decent shade; in autumn the light through the leaves is genuinely worth the trip.

Bring proper walking shoes - it can get boggy in places - and don't expect waymarking to be brilliant. That said, it's free, it's local, and it does what a forest should do: feel like somewhere wild that happens to be ten minutes from Colchester town centre.
