Point Pool

A quiet stretch of water just outside Worcester, Point Pool is the sort of place locals know about and visitors stumble upon by accident. It's a working gravel pit that's been allowed to flood naturally, creating something genuinely peaceful on the edge of the Midlands. The walk around it takes about forty minutes if you're not stopping, though you probably will be.

What you get is straightforward: a lake fringed with trees, the odd fisherman, and views across to open countryside. There's a footpath that runs most of the way around, so you can do a proper circuit without scrambling through fields. Birdwatchers come here regularly - herons, cormorants, the usual suspects. It's not dramatic, but that's partly the appeal.

This works best for people who want a gentle walk rather than a destination in itself. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after half an hour, though there's something calming about walking water-level when you're exhausted from a longer day out. Retired walkers, photographers, and anyone keen on spotting wildlife will get genuine value from it.

If you're staying at Brook House Woods or The Rookery Woods - both within three miles - it's a solid morning jaunt before breakfast gets properly started. Free access, no facilities that I could find, so bring water. Go when the light's decent; on grey days it can feel a bit flat. Worth the drive if you're in the area for a week, but not a reason to pick this part of the world on its own.
