Pondbottom Wood

Walking into Pondbottom Wood feels like stepping back about fifty years - it's proper old-school Essex woodland, the kind locals have known about forever but tourists pass right by. The paths wind through dense broadleaf trees with enough damp ground to keep things green and interesting, and there's a genuine quiet here that's harder to find than you'd expect this close to Royston.

It's brilliant for anyone who wants a straightforward woodland walk without the National Trust visitor centre crowds. You'll find families with primary school kids manage it fine, though the uneven terrain and mud after rain mean wellies are sensible. There are no marked trails that I could find, so come prepared to navigate by instinct - that's half the appeal really. The wood stretches long enough for a proper ramble, though an hour covers the main bits thoroughly.

The nearest proper base is Royston itself, a reasonable market town about three miles north. For a longer stay, Pightle Farm Campsite sits reasonably close and gives you space to explore the wider area. The wood doesn't demand a special journey on its own - it works best as a half-morning detour during a wider Essex walk. After heavy rain it can be genuinely boggy, so timing matters. Combine it with a pub lunch in Royston and you've got a decent half-day sorted.
