Poole Coppice

The woodland around Poole Coppice offers proper walking territory just outside Tiverton - nothing flashy, just decent trees and quiet paths where you won't bump into crowds. It's the sort of forest where you actually notice things: birdsong, light filtering through oak and beech, the smell after rain. Not enormous, but easy enough to spend a couple of hours wandering without feeling rushed.

Walkers will get the most from it. The terrain is gentle enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find it a bit samey after the first thirty minutes - there's no castle ruins or playground to break things up. Local knowledge helps here; paths can be muddy and a bit unclear in places, so go with a map rather than hoping to wing it.

The real appeal is the peace. If you're staying nearby - Nirvana Glamping is just five miles away - this works as a morning walk before heading elsewhere. It's not the sort of destination you'd drive an hour for, but as part of a broader Devon trip around Tiverton, it fills a gap when the weather's halfway decent. Free to walk, no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so bring water and decent boots. Go midweek if you can; weekends mean more dog walkers, which some people love and others find defeats the purpose of being in a forest.
