Popjoy Wood

The woodland paths through Popjoy Wood feel properly removed from the world, even though Lewes is barely a stone's throw away. Ancient oaks and beech trees create a canopy thick enough to block out most of the sky, and the forest floor is soft underfoot - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think.

It's a walker's wood rather than a destination in itself. Most people spend an hour or two working their way through the trails, spotting bluebells in spring and enjoying the cool shade on warm days. Families with younger children will find it manageable, though the ground can be muddy after rain, so decent boots matter. Dogs absolutely love it here.

There's no formal visitor infrastructure that I'm aware of - no car park, no facilities, no entrance fee. You simply find your way in and make of it what you will. That's part of the appeal, honestly. It's the kind of wood you stumble upon rather than plan for.

If you're based at The Secret Campsite or Blackberry Wood, both less than three miles away, Popjoy Wood slots in nicely as a morning wander before heading into Lewes proper. It won't eat up your whole day, but it'll scratch that woodland itch and give you some proper forest air before you move on to whatever else the area has to offer. Go on a dry day and you'll get the most from it.
