Porthleven Harbour

The working fishing harbour at Porthleven is the sort of place that makes you understand why people move to Cornwall and never leave. Colourful boats bob against the stone walls, nets pile up on the quayside, and there's a genuine sense that this isn't a theme-park version of a fishing village - it's the real thing, still functioning as it has for centuries.

You can walk the full circuit of the harbour in about twenty minutes, stopping to watch the boats come and go or grabbing a coffee from one of the cafes that line the front. The beach itself is shingle and sand, decent for a paddle if you're staying at The Secret Garden Glamping five miles away in the same stretch of coast. It's the sort of place that works best if you're not in a massive rush - sit on the harbour wall for half an hour, watch the light change on the water, maybe grab some fish and chips.

Families get something out of it, especially younger kids who'll be mesmerised by the boats. But honestly, Porthleven's strength is as a proper working village rather than a structured attraction. There's no admission charge, no opening hours to worry about. The real draw is the atmosphere and the fact that everything you're watching is genuine activity, not performance. Combine it with Praa Sands beach just along the coast if you want a full morning's worth of seaside time. Don't expect rides or facilities - come for authenticity instead.
