Powerstock Common Nature Reserve

The open heathland at Powerstock Common rolls out in front of you like something from a landscape painting - gorse, heather, and silver birch stretching across a proper slice of Dorset countryside. It's a nature reserve that feels genuinely wild, the kind of place where you might spot adders basking on warm days or hear the call of woodlarks echoing across the heath.

This is walker territory, mainly. The common sits just a short drive west of Bridport, and it's the sort of spot you come to for an hour's ramble rather than a full day out. The paths wind through different habitats - open heath gives way to woodland in patches, and there's enough variation to keep things interesting without being complicated. Family groups with energetic kids will get on fine here, though the terrain is uneven in places and it's not somewhere you'd push a buggy.
