Preston Guild Wheel (Broughton Inlet)

The Preston Guild Wheel at Broughton Inlet is a proper surprise if you're camping nearby Preston and fancy getting out into something a bit wilder. It's a nature reserve where the Ribble estuary opens up into mudflats and salt marsh - the sort of place where you'll actually see wading birds doing their thing rather than just reading about them in a guidebook.

You're looking at a walk around water and wetland, with decent views across the inlet depending on the tide. Binoculars are essential here; this is genuinely good for birdwatchers and anyone who wants to understand what Lancashire's coast actually does. The walk itself isn't strenuous, which means families with younger kids can manage it without complaints halfway round. Allow an hour or so, maybe longer if you're serious about spotting things.

It works well as a half-day outing from any of the nearby holiday parks - Brylea Caravan Park is closest at just over three miles away, making it an easy drive followed by a proper stretch of the legs. The light is best in early morning when the birds are most active and the mudflats catch the sun properly. Parking can be a bit tight depending on when you visit, so weekday mornings beat weekends.

Nature reserves like this aren't for everyone, mind. If your crew needs play equipment and ice cream vans, look elsewhere. But if you want to see actual Lancashire wildlife without the twee village package, this delivers.
