Preston Mill

There's something quietly compelling about Preston Mill, sat just outside Dunbar in East Lothian. This is a proper working water mill - one of Scotland's last - and the moment you step inside, you understand why the National Trust bothers to keep it going. The machinery still turns when there's water flow, and watching grain being ground the way it has been since the 1700s is genuinely absorbing.

You're looking at a red-sandstone building that's survived centuries of Scottish weather, plus a cottage next door where the miller's family actually lived. The interior is tight and atmospheric - low ceilings, the smell of stone and grain, shafts and wheels doing their job. Kids tend to find it more interesting than you'd expect, especially if you catch it on a day when the mill's working; there's something hypnotic about watching the whole system in motion.

Allow about an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type to read every panel and ask the staff questions. Free entry is likely - it's an NTS property and they run most of their mills without charge. The place opens April through October, so plan accordingly. Hours are 10:30 to 5pm, Thursday through Monday, which is fairly standard for Scottish heritage sites.

If you're staying at Belhaven Bay Caravan Park just down the road, this makes a logical half-day stop on the way to exploring Dunbar's coastal walks. It won't blow your mind, but it's the sort of place that teaches you something proper about how people lived and worked.
