It's a mix of woodland, grassland, and wetland, the sort of place where you can actually spot things if you're paying attention: birds, butterflies, the occasional fox if you're lucky enough. The main draw is the gentle walking trails that wind through the reserve without being too demanding. Maybe ninety minutes to two hours if you're taking your time and stopping to look about.

Walkers will get the most from it, particularly those with binoculars and a proper field guide. Kids under ten might find it a bit samey after an hour unless they're genuinely into spotting wildlife - there's no playground or café to break things up. If you're camped at Pegs and Pitches (literally a ten-minute walk away) or Brighton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite a couple of miles out, it's perfect for a morning sortie when the light's good.

The reserve is free to access and open year-round, though spring and autumn are your best bets for seeing migrating birds. It works well alongside a seaside break in Brighton proper - close enough that you're not spending half your day getting there, but far enough that you escape the seafront bustle.
