Pricky Bank Wood

A steep woodland walk just inland from Whitby, Prickly Bank Wood is exactly the sort of place you'll stumble upon by accident and be grateful you did. The woods drop down sharply through mixed broadleaf trees - oak, ash, hazel - towards a beck that runs through the valley floor, and in spring the place is carpeted with bluebells. It's not vast, so you're looking at maybe an hour's walk if you take it slowly, but it feels properly wild for somewhere this close to the coast.

Walkers will get the most from it. The paths are steep in places and can be muddy underfoot, especially after rain, so decent boots matter. Families with younger kids might find the gradient frustrating, though older children who enjoy a proper scramble through the trees will be in their element. There's nothing fancy here - no facilities, no signage worth writing home about - which is rather the point.

The wood sits well within a wider Whitby holiday. Northcliffe & Seaview Holiday Parks are barely two miles away, making this an easy morning expedition before heading down to the seafront. It's the kind of place to go when you want something real - a bit of exertion, actual trees, no crowds. The beck runs clear when the weather's been kind, and in autumn the colour here is worth the drive from wherever you're staying. Free, obviously. Go early or late in the day if you want any sense of solitude.
