Puffin Rock

The cave mouth opens onto a stretch of rocky shore near Strathcarron, where you can actually see puffins nesting on the cliff faces above - hence the name. It's a proper sea cave, the kind you have to time your visit around the tides if you want to explore it properly without getting cut off. The rock formations inside are dramatic enough, all smooth stone worn by centuries of waves, but honestly the main draw is scanning those cliffs for the birds themselves.

This works best for walkers and wildlife enthusiasts rather than families with young kids, mainly because access is tidal and the approach involves scrambling over uneven rocks. You'll need to check tide times before you go - there's no point turning up without doing that homework. Allow a couple of hours if you're combining it with a proper coastal walk; the cave itself takes twenty minutes to explore if the tide's out enough.

It sits well within a wider Highland exploration. Shieldaig Camping & Cabins is barely a mile and a half away, making it an easy add-on if you're basing yourself there. The real appeal isn't the cave alone - it's the combination of geology and wildlife in one spot. Bring binoculars, waterproof boots, and a tide table.
