About Quarry Bank
The mill itself is impressive. Built in 1784, it's massive, all brick and iron, and the mill manager's house sits alongside it - a proper Georgian place that shows the wealth the cotton trade generated. Inside, you can see the looms in action, watch demonstrations, and actually understand how cloth got made before factories became fully mechanised. The Apprentice House is where the real story gets uncomfortable though - kids as young as ten worked here, lived here, and the museum doesn't shy away from that.
It's genuinely engaging for families with children old enough to take things in, probably from about eight onwards. Younger kids might find the machinery repetitive after forty minutes. History types will spend a good three hours here without rushing. The riverside walk around the site is lovely, and there's decent space to explore at your own pace.
If you're staying at Sycamore Farm Caravan Site nearby, it's absolutely worth the short drive. Entry fees apply, though National Trust members get in free. Summer weekends get busy - aim for a weekday morning if you can. Allow at least two hours, three if you want to do the house and apprentice quarters properly.
