Rabbit Copse

A modest woodland patch just outside Waterlooville, Rabbit Copse is the sort of place locals know about and visitors stumble upon by accident. It's small - don't expect a grand forest trek - but that's rather the point. You get decent tree cover, a few informal paths winding through, and enough greenery to feel genuinely away from the suburban sprawl that surrounds Hampshire in this area.

It works best for a quick leg-stretch if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Wallops Wood or Rookesbury Park. Twenty minutes to half an hour is realistic. Families with young children will find it manageable; older kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're the type to get excited about spotting woodland creatures. Dog walkers absolutely love it.

There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no obvious signage - it's genuinely wild in that pleasantly neglected English way. Free access, naturally. Go on a damp morning after rain and the whole place smells properly alive. Avoid peak summer weekends if you're after any peace.

It's not a destination in itself, but it slots in nicely with a longer day out exploring the South Downs nearby. If you're camping at Cedar Valley or one of the other sites dotted around, combining it with a walk toward Havant or a visit to Queen Elizabeth Country Park gives you a solid afternoon. The copse reminds you why Hampshire's quiet corners matter - not every woodland needs to be a showstopper.
