Waterlooville

Former Royal Navy families know Waterlooville well - this Hampshire town grew around the needs of nearby Portsmouth's naval base. What started as military housing has evolved into a proper commuter hub, though it retains that slightly regimented feel of purpose-built developments.

The real draw here isn't the town centre itself, which can feel a bit quiet midweek. Instead, it's the cracking countryside that surrounds it. Portsdown Hill offers some of the best views across the Solent you'll find anywhere - on a clear day you can see right across to the Isle of Wight. The chalk downland here is properly dramatic, especially around Old Winchester Hill where the ancient fort remains still dominate the landscape.

History buffs will find plenty to explore beyond the obvious. The Deserted Medieval Village of Widley tells a fascinating story of abandoned settlements, while Exercise Dreme 1944 marks where Allied forces practiced for D-Day. More sombre is the Sergeant HH Adair Hurricane Crash Memorial, a reminder of the area's wartime significance.

Woodland walks are everywhere once you know where to look. Shuts Grove and Peake Wood offer proper rambling territory, while the numerous copses scattered about - Rabbit Copse, Bullshead Copse, Whitewool Hanger - provide shorter strolls perfect for families.

Getting here is straightforward enough. The A3 runs right past, making it easily accessible from London or the south coast. Portsmouth is just eight miles south, while Winchester lies 20 miles north. Staying at one of the nearby parks puts you right in the heart of this rolling Hampshire countryside, with both the naval heritage of Portsmouth and the cathedral city of Winchester within easy reach.
