Raisgill Wood

Walk into Raisgill Wood and you're immediately struck by how quiet it is - proper woodland, the kind where you can actually hear yourself think. The forest sits near Leyburn in North Yorkshire, and it's the sort of place that works equally well for a bracing afternoon stomp or a gentle meander with the kids in tow.

The wood itself is fairly compact, which means you won't get lost for hours on end, but there's enough path-work to make it feel like a proper woodland adventure. Ancient trees, soft ground underfoot, and if you time it right in autumn, the whole thing turns into a carpet of colour. In spring the bluebells are decent too, though you'll want to go mid-week if you value solitude.

It's not a destination that demands hours of your day - more the sort of place you'd slot in while exploring the Wensleydale area. If you're based at Stablefell Holidays and Campsite just down the road, it's perfect for working off breakfast before heading into Leyburn for lunch. The walks are manageable enough for families, though younger children might find the longer routes a bit much.

Free access, no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring water if you're planning a longer circuit. Best visited outside peak tourist season when the paths aren't rammed with day-trippers. It's the kind of wood that rewards you for turning up, rather than shouting about itself.
