Ramps Hill

The walk up Ramps Hill takes about twenty minutes from the car park, and you're rewarded with proper views across the Wiltshire countryside. It's not dramatic - nothing like the Cotswolds escarpments you might be expecting - but on a clear day you can see for miles in every direction. The summit itself is a modest grassy rise, the sort of place where you half expect someone to be flying a kite.

This is one for walkers rather than sightseers. If you're after a quick photo stop, you'll be disappointed. But if you want a straightforward leg-stretcher from Swindon way, it does the job well. Families with young kids might find the climb a bit much for what amounts to a bare hilltop - there's nothing to actually do once you're up there except look around and eat a sandwich.

The real value is as part of a broader walk. It sits well within reach of the holiday parks scattered around the area - Park Farm Campsite is barely a mile and a half away - so it makes sense to build it into a rambling day rather than travel specifically for it. Early morning visits beat afternoons when the car park fills up with dog walkers.

Worth the detour if you're camped nearby. Less worth planning a trip around, unless you're the type who simply enjoys accumulating hilltop visits.
