Rams Hill

The walk up Rams Hill from Wantage is a proper leg-burner, but the payoff is worth the effort. You're climbing to 763 metres on the Oxfordshire-Berkshire border, and the views across the Vale of the White Horse spread out below you like someone's unfolded a map. On a clear day you can pick out the white horse itself carved into the chalk slopes near Uffington, a brilliant landmark to orient yourself.

It's an honest hill walk rather than a stroll - allow a couple of hours there and back depending on your fitness. The path isn't particularly technical, just relentlessly upward through farmland before reaching the summit plateau where an Iron Age fort sits tucked away. The ramparts are subtle but unmistakable once you spot them, and you get a real sense of why the ancients chose this spot. Visibility for miles in every direction would have made it a proper stronghold.

This suits walkers and history types far more than casual visitors looking for an easy half-hour outing. Kids who are into peaks and forts will love it; those expecting theme park entertainment will get bored fast. The nearest glamping - Evelyns Garden just 1.3 miles away - makes this a sensible addition to a wider Oxfordshire break, and you can combine it with the Uffington White Horse or a poke around Wantage itself. Bring water and decent boots. There's no cafe at the top, just the view and the wind.
