Ravenhill Park

The woodland paths at Ravenhill Park wind through proper Staffordshire countryside just outside Rugeley, offering a decent escape if you're camping nearby on Cannock Chase. It's a nature reserve rather than a manicured attraction - think local walking spot with rough trails, woodland birds, and the occasional glimpse of wildlife rather than visitor facilities or signposting.

What you actually get is open access to wooded terrain and scrub habitat. The reserve protects heathland and woodland that's rare in these parts, so if you're into spotting breeding birds or tracking seasonal changes, there's genuine ecological interest here. For families, it's a bit low-key - older kids who enjoy rambling will find enough to occupy them for an hour or so, but younger ones might find it a bit quiet and unstructured.

The real advantage is proximity. If you're staying at Cannock Chase Camping or any of the other sites clustered within a couple of miles - Chase Glamping Pods, Silver Trees, or the farms round Four Oaks and Tackeroo - Ravenhill works as a morning or late-afternoon leg-stretch. It's free access, naturally, and you won't need more than 90 minutes unless you're a serious birder.

Go in late spring or early summer when the breeding birds are active and there's actually something to see. Winter can feel a bit bleak. It's not flashy, but if you're already in the area for a Cannock Chase break, it's worth a wander.
