Ravensdell Wood

The woods around Dunstable aren't famous for a reason - and Ravensdell Wood is a case in point. It's a proper little patch of forest, the sort of place locals know and visitors stumble upon by accident, with decent walking trails that'll take you a good hour or so if you're not rushing.

What you get is straightforward: tree-lined paths, some decent shade on a hot day, and the quiet sort of woodland you'd expect in this corner of Buckinghamshire. The undergrowth is thick enough to feel like you've escaped somewhere, even though Dunstable is just down the road. Wildlife watchers might spot pheasants and the occasional deer, though it's not a nature reserve - just a working forest where you can walk.

This works best for families wanting a quick leg-stretch or walkers building a longer route through the Chiltern Hills. Kids won't be overwhelmed - there's no visitor centre or facilities that I could find, so bring water and don't expect loos. Allow an hour minimum, longer if you're taking it slow with little ones.

If you're based at Merlin Farm Camping near Whipsnade Zoo or one of the other sites scattered around the area - Norcott Campsite or Chiltern Yurts - it's a reasonable walk or short drive to burn off some energy. Pair it with a visit to Whipsnade itself and you've got a solid morning sorted. It's not dramatic or unmissable, but it does its job well enough.
