Rayburn Lake

Rayburn Lake sits just outside Morpeth, a proper rural spot where the water reflects whatever sky decides to show up that day. It's the kind of place locals know about and visitors stumble across by accident - which is precisely why it's worth the detour. The lake itself is small and intimate rather than dramatic, ringed by woodland that keeps things sheltered even when the Northumberland wind picks up.

You'll get the most from it as a walker. There's a decent circuit around the perimeter if you're after a gentle hour or so, or you can just pull in for a sit-down and some peace. The water's proper clean, and the reflections in early morning or late afternoon light are worth the bother of getting there. Families with younger kids might manage twenty minutes before restlessness sets in, but those with proper walkers in tow will find it a solid leg-stretcher between other attractions.

It's free to access and there's parking near the entrance. No visitor centre or facilities that I could spot, so bring what you need. Rayburn works brilliantly as a break in your holiday park stay - Forget Me Not Country Park is barely a mile and a half away, or you're within easy reach of Bockenfield and Felmoor if you're based further out. Nothing fancy, but that's precisely the point. Sometimes the best discovery is the place that doesn't try too hard.
