Red Cliffs in Berwick-upon-Tweed

The sandstone cliffs that rise up just north of Berwick town centre are a proper striking sight - burnt orange and deep red in certain light, especially when the sun hits them low in the afternoon. You get the best view from the beach below or walking along the coastal path that runs past them, and it's free to do either. The cliffs aren't particularly high or dramatic compared to what you'll find further down the Yorkshire coast, but they've got character. Timing-wise, late afternoon suits it best when the light catches the red in the rock. Come during winter storms and you'll see why these cliffs matter to the local landscape - they take a battering. If you're staying at Haven Berwick Holiday Centre or Berwick Seaview nearby, it's essentially on your doorstep and costs nothing to explore. Combine it with a wander around Berwick's medieval walls and you've got a proper half-day sorted.
