Rennesley Garden Wood

A proper woodland walk just east of Hertford, Rennesley Garden Wood offers the kind of peace you don't find in most of Hertfordshire - tall trees, decent paths, and enough space to actually get lost in without worrying you're trespassing on someone's back garden. The canopy's thick enough that even on warm days it stays cool under cover, and in autumn the floor's carpeted with beech leaves that crunch satisfyingly underfoot.

It's not a destination attraction - you're not coming here for facilities or interpretation boards or any of that. You're coming because you fancy a solid two-hour forest walk without much fuss. The woodland itself is mixed deciduous, so there's variety in what you're looking at depending on the season. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right. Winter's when the structure of the place becomes clearer, all those skeletal branches opening up sight lines you don't get in summer.

Walkers will get the most from it. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after an hour - there's no play area or stream to splash about in, just trees and paths. But teenagers who actually like walking rather than being dragged to attractions will appreciate the straightforward nature of the thing.

If you're based at Church Farm Ardeley six miles away, this makes an easy morning sortie. It's the kind of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick loop - allow at least ninety minutes to actually see anything.
